First grade Parent Teacher Conference in Israel

It sure ain’t what I’m used to!!

My meeting with Ely’s teacher was set for 9:15 AM. Pretty strange time, I thought, since that’s the time the teacher usually teaches. But I figured she has someone come sit in the class while she meets with the parents.

OK.

Not quite…

I arrived on time and went straight to Ely’s classroom. I stood outside the door until the teacher saw I was there. I came into the classroom and saw that the children were receiving candies for having brought in notes from their parents saying that their heads were clean from lice! I’m not joking! This is Israel!

Anyhow, the teacher told the 9 girls in Ely’s class to sit nicely and eat their snacks and she would be right back. I guessed she was leaving them alone and knew what she was doing.

I walked out of the classroom with the teacher behind me, stopped to wait for her to guide me to where we were going to meet. But she just stood there. And without noticing my surprise, began to tell me what an excellent student my daughter is, how she learns and reads and does math all wonderfully. No problems except maybe she moves too much in her seat, but when the teacher tells her to stop, Ely listens.

And that was it. The teacher walked back into the classroom.

Parent-teacher conference over!

Welcome to Israel!

2 questions:

1) What were you expecting? I'm not being facetious, I'm serious.

2) Did you get the feeling that the meeting would have been more in-depth if a) there had been a problem or b) you had brought up an issue that YOU are concerned about? Or did she just give you a quick update and then brush you off? Maybe the meeting was short because she had no problems to report, and you had no problems to report?

Yuck!!! And not because of the lice! Next week they'll bring notes from the dentist. . .
